History
The earliest recorded mention in history for the name Shaul is a Biblical recording in the
books of Genesis 36:37-38, Exodus 6:15, Numbers
26:13. The first Shaul was the son of Simeon, Simeon the son of Jacob (Israel),
Jacob the son of Isaac, Isaac the son of Abraham. Jacob took his offspring and their
families (totaling approximately 60 persons) and went into Egypt during a time of
famine. 400 years later Moses led the people of Israel (totaling over 601,000 people)
out of Egypt in a great exodus. Shaul's family was then a tribe called Shaulites. After reaching the
Promise Land, there is no further mention of Shaul or the Shaulites. The name Shaul appears
later in Biblical times in reference to King Shaul, who does not appear to be of
the Shaulite tribe. Where and from whom the Shaul surname originated is not certain.
It can be said with some certainty that the Shaul family ancestors were of
religious nobility during the "Dark Ages" in early Germany with the
surname Schall and perhaps Von Schall. There
are various spellings associated with the name, i.e. Shall, Schaul,
Shaull, Shaulis, Shawl and Shaw are the most common.
Shaul's of Group A: the earliest to migrate to the western hemisphere, were of Palatine
descent tracing back to 1522 in Sharenstetten, Donaukreis, Wuerttemburg, Germany to Stoffel
Schall. According to his 4th great grandson, Johannes Schall, arrived in America the mid 1740's
and in recent findings a Johannes Schall arrived in Philadelphia on September
15, 1748 as a Palatine German aboard the "Judith" (it's unconfirmed that this is
the same person). He changed his name to John Shaul when he was naturalized in 1761. He settled
in New York's Mohawk Valley in the township of Stark, which was later renamed Starkville
in Herkimer County, NY. He was married to Margretha Schaefer, her assumed
name as recorded in the baptism of their grandson, John M. Shaul, and her
surname is also suggested by the fact that Matheus Schaefer was one of the
sponsors of their son Matthias baptism. This family line follows a migratory path from New York to
Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Oregon and California.
Children of John Shaul:
1.
George, (July 20,
1753 - April 23, 1822) New York
2.
Matthias, (August 10,
1756 - November 23, 1831) Michigan
3.
Henry, (July 2, 1758 - October 26, 1835) Illinois > Nebraska
> California
4.
John, (February 18, 1760 - June 08, 1844) Wisconsin
5.
Sebastian, (1766 - December 1849) Illinois >
Dakota > Kansas > Missouri
Shaul's of Group B: Sailed to America from England, and arrived in Virginia
aboard the "Virginia" in 1773 under the name Peter Challe.
It's believed Peter was possibly a Huguenot, or from near the French/Swiss border, but his origin has not been proven. Peter
(as Shaul) settled in an area called Germany Valley in Virginia, and about 1788 he
and other settlers moved to West Fork in Harrison County, Virginia, (now West Virginia).
Shortly after Peter's death in 1804, this entire family moved from Virginia to Ohio. Their migratory path
is from Ohio to Indiana, Illinois, Iowa,
Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Idaho, Washington and California.
